PostSubject: 5th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment Hat Pin   May 6th 2012, 2:58 pm

[url=http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=928&u=14794735][/url.........The 5th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment were made up of men from the old 5th New York Volunteer Regiment organizing in New York City. On October 27th, 1863, the Battalion left from New York City, New York and moved to Washington D.C.......They became part of the 22nd Corps. They would serve in the defenses of Washington D.C until May 1864.........They would serve until 1865. The Regiment was engaged in Battles around Cold Harbor, Richmond and the seige of Petersburg. They fought at Weldon Railroad in June 1864 and engaged at Popular Springs Church from September 29 to October 2, and were in action at Hatcher's Run. They also fought at White Oak Rd, Five Forks, and were at the Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House. Killed in action......7 Officers.....49 enlisted men........Died of wounds........4 Officers......24 enlisted men........Died of disease and other causes.............86 enlisted (57 died as POW'S. Here is one of the orginal hat pins worn by a trooper with the 5th. Item purchase from a civil war collector from New York City, New York......Hat Pin measures 2 inches tall and about 1 inch across.
